Dear CYSA Coaches and Parents,
We have recently been contacted by parents and local club presidents about the conduct of coaches, parents and players within our association. Unfortunately our club has some issues that need to be addressed immediately.
The first issue to address is parent and player contact with referees. Only coaches are to address referees during or after games. When I say "address" I mean discuss, talk….not yell or criticize. There is a shortage of referees and we are doing our best to recruit more. However, there are a lot of new and younger referees that are teenagers and they are doing the best job that they can. They have been trained in the rules of the game and at all times deserve your respect. They haven't necessarily been trained in how to be abused or deal with unruly or obnoxious behavior. Please remember that our referees start out with a love of the game and excited to referee. Any occurrence of non-respectful behavior between coaches/parents/players and referees will be considered referee abuse and will be formally documented. Anyone can fill out and submit an official incident report (form available here), or submit written documentation in the form of a letter or email to the CYSA Board. Washington State Youth Soccer Association (WSYSA) rules require this written documentation and the state association takes referee abuse seriously. Referee abuse will not be tolerated by the CYSA or the WSYSA.
Secondly, negative or demeaning comments to players/coaches will, not be tolerated. We encourage you to cheer and encourage the youth players on the field, but we would like to ask you to keep all comments positive and inspirational. Our youth are playing recreational soccer for fun. Our job as parents/coaches is to instill the fundamentals of the game, teamwork, sportsmanship and respect for all. Parents and coaches - we ask you to conduct yourselves in a respectful and appropriate manor at all times when in the presence of CYSA youth. Our youth players learn by example - please remember this. Show respect for other coaches and players at all times and set a positive example for our youth. Again, if there are incidents to report, please do so by submitting a written report.
Thirdly, criticizing other coaches or players on or off the field will not be tolerated. Coaching can become very competitive - we understand. Please again remember that we are all collectively here with one joint mission, to teach the game of soccer and instill the core values of respect, teamwork, sportsmanship, character, perseverance etc. It's not all about winning. There is also a lot (for us all to learn) when we lose. Both are equally important for our youth to experience and learn from. Please remember at all times that we (as adults) are setting the example for our youth to follow. Our youth generally want to please their coaches and parents. But, don't ask them to do so at the expense of their core values - for the game of soccer. This is not only detrimental to the game of soccer, but to the future of our youth.
It is our job as parents and coaches to set the positive example and we thank you for doing this. Only then can we all be proud of the association and the game we all love and respect.
We ask you to give immediate attention to the above issues is appreciated.
